Default Jays, Marcum punch out Red Sox

TORONTO -- A career-best performance from rookie starter Shaun Marcum led the Blue Jays into second place in the American League East with a 5-0 win over the Red Sox on Monday night.
Marcum (3-4) held Boston to just two hits and recorded a personal high of 10 strikeouts in eight shutout innings. The rookie right-hander didn't allow a hit until shortstop Alex Cora's infield single deep behind second base with one out in the sixth.

The Jays were held hitless themselves by Boston starter Tim Wakefield (7-11) through the first 4 2/3 innings. Catcher Jason Phillips broke through with a double in the fifth and Russ Adams followed with a walk. Right fielder Alex Rios then slammed Wakefield's first offering over the left-field wall for a three-run homer.

Bengie Molina added to the home-run parade in the sixth. The Toronto designated hitter belted a two-run homer to improve his career-best total to 18 for the season.

That was an incredable win for the Jays last night. Marcum gave me hope for next season with the way he pitched. Also it was nice to see so many fans come out for the last home game (over 40,000).
