TORONTO -- As Vernon Wells jogged off the field at Rogers Centre, a group of reporters stopped him, figuring it could possibly be the last time the center fielder spoke before a home game as a member of the Blue Jays.
It hadn't occurred to Wells that Monday night's game against Boston might be his last appearance in a Jays uniform in Toronto, though. The two-time All-Star's contract situation is a top priority for the club heading into the winter, and as far as Wells is concerned, he plans on suiting up for Toronto again in 2007.
"I don't think it's going to be [my last home game with the Jays]," Wells said. "I hope to be here next year and for a long time to come. ... It's been fun so far and hopefully we'll get to experience some special things and win a championship while I'm here."
First, though, the Blue Jays have to find a way to keep Wells in Toronto. His current deal expires after next season, in which he's scheduled to make $5.6 million -- a salary far below what he'd command as a free agent. In order to avoid losing him after next season, the Jays will attempt to sign Wells to a contract extension this winter.
