TORONTO -- When a team drafts a position player in the first round of the First-Year Player Draft, it hopes that player will one day become "the guy."
This doesn't mean that the player will one day make the Hall of Fame or win a World Series MVP trophy. It means that if a club has enough confidence in a player to draft him in the first round, it expects that, at the very least, he will develop into an everyday member of the starting lineup.
Since Russ Adams was drafted 14th overall by the Blue Jays in 2002, it was hoped that he would become "the guy" in Toronto's middle infield for years to come. After a disappointing 2006 campaign, however, Adams' future as a starter with the Jays is up in the air.
