TORONTO -- Reed Johnson didn't want to call it envy. But the Blue Jays outfielder couldn't find one word to describe how it felt to watch the Yankees inch closer to the division title that Toronto had hoped to contend for this year.
The Blue Jays entered Tuesday just one loss away from officially being eliminated from the American League East race. New York held a 12-game lead over Toronto with exactly 12 contests remaining in the 2006 season. Maybe he didn't want to use the word "envy," but Johnson knows the Jays would've liked the scenario to be reversed.
"It's one of those situations where we wish we were two weeks of the season left and getting ready to clinch a playoff spot," Johnson said on Monday. "That's the ultimate goal of the guys here, especially the guys who have been in this organization for quite a long time.
