The Toronto Blue Jays' total attendance hit its highest level in seven years Sunday, an accomplishment that comes less than a week after Rogers Media Inc. said it expects the club to lose $25 million this season.
A crowd of 32,959 took in a 5-3 win over Tampa Bay Devil Rays, pushing their 2006 total to 2,045,068. That surpassed last year's mark of 2,014,987 and is their best figure since drawing 2,163,464 in 1999.
With seven home games left, the Blue Jays expect to finish with around 2.3 million clicks of the turnstile, short of the 2,454,283 fans they attracted in 1998.
"The momentum was going in the right direction and we're obviously pleased with the progress," team president Paul Godfrey said in an interview. "(Owner Ted) Rogers' decision to put more money into the team is showing in the attendance.
