TORONTO -- From a distance, the bat doesn't appear to be much different than any of the neighboring strips of lumber, which are strewn around Toronto's dugout prior to batting practice. Look closer, though, and the slender piece of hickory is very unlike the others.
The handle is no longer smooth -- a result of a season's worth of pine tar and a countless number of swings. The entire surface is black, except for an oval-shaped portion of the barrel, which has been worn down by the daily barrage of baseballs it's encountered, revealing an inner layer of wood.
