Default Marcum eyes rotation spot in 2007

TORONTO (CP) - Filling out the back end of the rotation has been a sore spot all season for the Toronto Blue Jays. Rookie right-hander Shaun Marcum is doing what he can to make that problem go away.

Marcum had a career-high six strikeouts over five innings but didn't figure in the decision as the Blue Jays beat the Cleveland Indians 4-3 on Monday.

A third-round pick in the 2003 draft, Marcum is one of three rookies to take a turn in the rotation this season. So far he's fared better than either Casey Janssen or Ty Taubenheim, the two pitchers who came before him.

"He's a little more polished right now," said Blue Jays manager John Gibbons. "The stuff is very similar in all three of them. They have different styles mechanically and things like that, but (Marcum) is a little more polished right now."
