SURPRISE, Ariz. -- With Brandon McCarthy sidelined 4-6 weeks due to elbow inflammation, the Rangers have signed pitcher Sidney Ponson to a Minor League contract and added him to their Spring Training roster.
Ponson, a 17-game winner in 2003 who has struggled both on and off the field the past four years, is expected to be in camp on Monday. Ponson was 2-5 with a 6.93 ERA in seven starts for the Twins last year and 82-101 with a 4.94 ERA in 259 career games, including 245 starts, with the Orioles, Giants, Cardinals, Yankees and Twins.
"He's thrown all winter and we've seen him a few times," general manager Jon Daniels said. "He's down 20 pounds from what he was when he struggled the past couple of years. We talked with him about our expectations and he understands where he is at this point of his career. He feels he has something to prove."
