Verlander likely will be named American League rookie of the year. Two days later, Jim Leyland's functional title since May -- AL manager of the year -- almost certainly will become official.
That same week, while general managers meet in Naples, Fla., it's possible another Tiger will be honored. President and GM Dave Dombrowski is perhaps the leading candidate to be named executive of the year after presiding over a 52-win turnaround since 2003.
Verlander is signed through 2009 and won't be eligible for free agency until two years later. Leyland is under contract for two more seasons, and his current popularity is such that he might manage into eternity -- that is, if he's not elected governor next week. Dombrowski, meanwhile, is signed only through next season.
