Jim Leyland had been away from managing a long time, probably too long, if his spring training schedule offered any clue as to the zeal a man felt for his new job.

And it did. Leyland checked into Lakeland, Fla., in January, weeks before any of his players were scheduled to arrive. The only surprise was that Leyland hadn't moved lock, stock and barrel to Lakeland last October within hours of being hired as Tigers manager.
