Manager Joe Maddon called Travis Lee "one of the finest first basemen I've ever seen," minutes after the Rays released the 10-year veteran, whose offense never really materialized in two seasons with Tampa Bay.

"We just felt there was no playing time left for him here and thought we'd give him an opportunity to catch on with somebody else possibly these last couple of weeks, maybe a contender looking for a first baseman," Maddon said.
