ST. PETERSBURG -- Rocco Baldelli has never forgotten his roots.
Each year when the Rays center fielder returns to his home state of Rhode Island, his offseason is full of youth baseball clinics and children's hospital visits. He's a special kind of guy, manager Joe Maddon said, so it's easy to understand why Baldelli is the Rays' nominee for the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award.
"At 24, Rocco is relatively young to be nominated for this prestigious award, but right from the outset of his professional career he has used his platform to help those less fortunate than him," said Rick Vaughn, Rays vice president of communications.
The award recognizes the player who best exemplifies the game of baseball, sportsmanship, community involvement and the individual's contribution to his team. It is named in honor of the former Pirates outfielder whose spirit and goodwill will always be remembered. Clemente died in a plane crash while attempting to transport relief supplies to earthquake-stricken Nicaragua on Dec. 31, 1972.
