Pineiro's spot in rotation may be in jeopardy
He's has gotten knocked around his last few starts
BY DAVID WILHELM
News-Democrat

ST. LOUIS -- Tony La Russa is growing increasingly exasperated by the performances of right-hander Joel Pineiro, but the St. Louis Cardinals manager said Pineiro's role will remain the same for the time being.

That could change later this month, however. The Cardinals have an unusually high number of six off days between Aug. 18 and Sept. 8, which could allow them to employ a four-man rotation, if La Russa deems it necessary.

"I started playing with it on the plane (Thursday) night to see what it does," La Russa said Friday before the Cardinals opened a three-game series against Philadelphia. "You could mess around with your rotation, absolutely."

Could Pineiro's spot in the rotation be in jeopardy? He is 3-5 with a 5.04 ERA and has surrendered 10 hits in each of his last four starts covering 21 2/3 innings, and has coughed up leads in each game, two of which the Cardinals have lost.

"He needs to do better," La Russa said. "He's capable. I have confidence in him."

Good but I'd like to see him hold onto leads.. thats the problem with him.. and most of our starters.. I know we lose a lot when he starts.. so hopefully Wainwright is OK today so he can go on rehab and replace him in the rotation!

I've been disappointed with Pineiro this year. He did great last year after we picked him up from Boston, which earned him a deal. If he can get back on track that would be super because If our bullpen situation doesn't improve, we will definitely need Wainwright in the bullpen.

Yeah I'd love it if he could start doing better.. I just dont wanna see Waino in the pen.. 1 start for 6 or 7 innings or 2-3 appearances for 3 innings? Give me the start.. gives us a better chance in games..
