Redbirds batter bruised Braves
By Joe Strauss
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
07/29/2008

ATLANTA — The Cardinals have merited praise as "overachievers" this season by routinely disposing of bad teams. For the first time since 1990 the Atlanta Braves can be counted among that company.

Quickly disposing of an injury-depleted team no longer familiar with cutoff men, reliable starting pitching or a constant starting lineup, the Cardinals mauled rookie emergency starting pitcher Charlie Morton before adding on against a flammable bullpen in a 12-3 rout Monday night in front of 28,705 at Turner Field.

The Cardinals pounded Morton for an 8-0 lead in 3 2/3 innings to give starting pitcher Braden Looper more than enough cushion for his first win since June 24.

"We've been having those games lately where we either pitch or we hit," Looper said. "We don't do both. Today I felt for the most part I pitched pretty well and we put some runs on the board."

Rookie left fielder Joe Mather began the uprising with a two-run homer in the second inning before adding a double and a single. Every Cardinal starting position player except third baseman Troy Glaus hit safely in a 13-hit barrage.

"It's big to come in the first game of the series and get this win the way we did," said right fielder Ryan Ludwick. "We pitched great. The entire offense came in and did a good job. We're one-up on the series."

Manager Tony La Russa cited "a string of really good at-bats" after his team equaled its season-high run total.

Cardinals probable pitcher

Todd Wellemeyer
Cardinals: For a while on Thursday, it appeared Wellemeyer was going to win his second straight decision for the first time since June 5. After the Cardinals bullpen lost their 23rd game of the year, though, Wellemeyer received another no-decision. For four innings, Wellemeyer had excellent stuff but succumbed to two long innings that drove up his pitch count. It was a better showing from May's Pitcher of the Month, though, and Wellemeyer another solid start would seem to say he has regained his consistency.

Braves probable pitcher

Jorge Campillo Braves: Tim Hudson has been placed on the disabled list, so the ongoing Atlanta shuffling means that Campillo will start. The right-hander started on Sunday, but he pitched only 1 2/3 innings before a lengthy rain delay in Philadelphia forced him out of the game.

Winning is fun.. lets do it again tonight!!!
