Wainwrights role uncertain (closer?)
Wainwright’s role is uncertain

NEW YORK — Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright will snap off his first curveball in nearly seven weeks during a throwing session today at Shea Stadium that signals a considerable stride in his rehab.
"Once I start throwing breaking balls, routinely throwing them hard," said Wainwright, who is recovering from a significant strain in his right middle finger. "Once I start spinning the ball with authority, then I'm pretty close to returning."
The Cardinals have not ruled out having Wainwright return to the bullpen, possibly as the team's closer. General manager John Mozeliak said "that is on the table as far as his role" but it will be discussed next week as Wainwright approaches a rehab appearance. Manager Tony La Russa said the focus should be on Wainwright's upcoming throw, not his future role.
