July 17, 2008 - Right-hander Chris Carpenter, who missed most of the 2007 season and all of the 2008 season so far, is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment this Sunday. "Carp" is scheduled to start for the Springfield Cardinals at Hammons Field, as they take on the Northwest Arkansas Naturals in game three of the seven-game home stand.
The 2005 National League Cy Young Award Winner had Tommy John surgery last season on his right elbow and has not pitched since.
Mozeliak added Carpenter's arm strength is fine, and his ability to throw a high pitch count is adequate. The club is mostly focused on their ace fine-tuning his stuff to be game-ready.
The Cardinals have up to 30 days to put Carpenter through a rehabilitation program, and Mozeliak said he is unsure if they will use the full 30 days. But there is no urgency to rush Carpenter back to the Majors before he is ready.
