MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Despite the sweat rolling off the bill of his cap like it had a spout attached to it, Chris Carpenter looked quite comfortable on the mound Friday night. Carpenter's rehabilitation start with the Class AAA Memphis Redbirds at AutoZone Park against the Portland Beavers was admittedly up and down at times.
"I was definitely pleased. I came out good in the first, then fell back into the easy mode that I was in at Springfield during the second (inning) and the start of the third," Carpenter said after his 78-pitch outing, which was his second rehab start after pitching earlier for Springfield. "The big question is when I wake up (today) and see how it feels.
He said he expects to talk to Cardinals manager Tony La Russa or general manager John Mozeliak soon "and figure out what's next."
His fastball hit 88-91 mph regularly, until his final pitch — a 75 mph breaking pitch that froze Huber for a strikeout.

La Russa: Carpenter starts Wednesday
By Derrick Goold
NEW YORK — Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter, after just two rehab starts, will return to the major-league rotation Wednesday in Atlanta, a little more than a year after Tommy John surgery ended his 2007 season, manager Tony La Russa confirmed Saturday afternoon.
Carpenter will be making his first major-league start since opening night 2007.
La Russa said the assignment hinges on how Carpenter feels after throwing a bullpen Sunday in St. Louis. If the righthander comes out of the side session well, he’ll join the team in Atlanta and start the third game of the series against the Braves. To make room on the roster for La Russa, the Cardinals will option Mitchell Boggs to Triple-A.
