Sox, Cards battle through injuries
Both teams persevere and face off on Sunday on TBS

BOSTON -- Given that the Boston Red Sox are a team battling injuries to a good chunk of its roster, it's inherent that the Sox can appreciate young talent stepping up and filling roles along the way.

The Red Sox continue to earn victories despite shipping regulars to and from the disabled list, evident by hovering around an .800 winning percentage at home. With Boston finishing up its three-game set against St. Louis as part of the TBS Game of the Week on Sunday, the Sox are well aware that the Cardinals have dealt with that same fill-in-the-position formula for success throughout the past several years.

"They've bounced around a little bit with some injuries," said J.D. Drew, who played with St. Louis from 1998 to 2003. "But they seem to keep their head above water every year."

This year's injury bug most notably hit Cardinals' starter Chris Carpenter [right elbow] and slugger Albert Pujols [strained left calf], both of whom are missing significant time heading into the All-Star break.

The equalizer? How about journeyman Kyle Lohse -- Friday's starter against the Red Sox -- posting an 8-2 record and a 3.77 ERA heading into the weekend. Lohse hasn't recorded more than nine wins in a season since posting 14 in 2003 with Minnesota.

As for offensive production helping to take the pressure off Pujols' injury, Ryan Ludwick is in the midst of a career season. The 29-year-old outfielder already has more home runs and RBIs this season than he did in all of last year, his first campaign playing more than 100 games.

"I know they've had a lot of things happen, they've had some people really step up, though," Sox manager Terry Francona said. "Ryan Ludwick [who played in Texas when Francona was a Rangers bench coach in 2002] ... he was a kid they thought had a chance to be good. Sometimes you get your first chance in the big leagues and it doesn't work. Then he had that hip surgery and all of a sudden he's back doing what he's doing, so it's a good story."

Perhaps it is that depth that keeps these teams near the tops of their respective divisions despite missing important components of their successes along the way. These two teams, after all, have claimed three of the past four World Series titles.

"It seems like they [the Cardinals] kind of piece things together and it really pans out year after year," Boston third baseman Mike Lowell said. "You put guys like Ludwick in there and he's having a huge year, and they take a chance on [Rick] Ankiel and it pans out."
