Molina removed on stretcher in neck brace
FROM STAFF REPORTS
06/15/2008

Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina was taken to a local hospital to be checked for neck and back injuries after a collision at home plate in the ninth inning of Sunday's game, according to Cardinals officials.

With the score tied, 6-6, in the ninth, Molina backhanded a throw from first baseman Chris Duncan, turning his back to Philadelphia runner Eric Bruntlett. As Molina reached back to tag Bruntlett, the runner crashed into Molina, sending the catcher forward and to the ground. He stirred enough to hold up the ball and then was surrounded by teammates and medical personnel.

Molina was fitted with a cervical collar and placed on a backboard on the field, and then taken via cart to a waiting ambulance.

Source says they're "encouraged" on Molina...think (and hope) he'll miss a few games, if that.

His teammates were upbeat about it after the game...they are hearing that he'll be OK, just sore.

Pujols talked to him, and reported back (to La Russa) that he's moving fine, but dealing with the pain.

The team's medical staff received the test results...

all tests came back negative...

but the doctors say he did sustain a mild concussion...

he will remain hospitalized overnight as a precaution.

sorry to hear of the concussion but it could be worse.

Molina suffers concussion in collision
Cards catcher remained conscious, will spend night in hospital
By Lee Hurwitz / MLB.com

ST. LOUIS -- Scary was the word of choice following the Cardinals' 7-6 win over the Phillies on Sunday. They didn't use it to describe how ferocious the Phillies' offense is or how the bullpen's performance in the eighth inning almost cost them the win.

Instead, they had to use it to portray how painful it was to watch catcher Yadier Molina lie motionless at home plate after the Phillies' Eric Bruntlett collided with the Cards catcher in the ninth.

After he was carted off the field, Molina was transported to a local hospital where he could be evaluated for back and neck pain. According to the Cardinals' medical staff, Molina sustained a mild concussion and will remain hospitalized overnight as a precautionary measure.

Besides LaRue, the catcher position is sparse without Molina. Bryan Anderson would be the likely callup from Triple-A Memphis if Molina were to go on the disabled list.

Second, Yadier Molina is expected to come to the ballpark this afternoon and see how much physical activity he can handle as he recovers from a mild concussion. The Cardinals did not plan on making a roster move until knowing more about Molina’s possible available for the coming week.

-- General manager John Mozeliak acknowledged that it is "not ideal" to enter a series, or even a game, with one healthy catcher. He then described Aaron Miles and Brendan Ryan "as our emergency guys who we have available in case."
