Default Wainwright placed on DL, will be re-evaluated this week

Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright left tonight's game one batter into the sixth inning with a sprained right middle finger, according to a Cardinals team official. Wainwright had thrown five innings, allowed seven hits and struck out four. He threw 73 pitches in the start and left with a runner on base and a six-run lead.

More in tomorrow's paper.

From Houston,

Derrick

Adam Wainwright, having cruised through five innings, felt a pop in the middle finger of his right pitching hand and abruptly left the Cardinals' 8-4 victory against the Astros on Saturday. The ace was said to have a sprained finger, but he will fly to St. Louis on Sunday and meet with team doctors Monday to determine the severity of the injury.

Wainwright felt some soreness and loss of feeling in his middle finger during his warm-up. He said he didn't have any trouble with it until the second batter of the sixth inning. He tried to flip a curveball by Darin Erstad, and as he did he felt the finger pop. He couldn't get pressure on his next pitch and motioned for team trainer Barry Weinberg.

"At that point, I realized I had no more business being in the game because I couldn't grip the ball," Wainwright said. "The feeling is exactly like a jammed finger. It's not swollen like it's jammed, but I can't bend it like it's jammed and I can't put any pressure on it."

There's been a news blackout ... no one will talk... this gives me a bad vibe.

According to Will Carroll of Baseball Prospectus, who does a lot of reporting on injuries, the Cardinals' medical people have been in contact with the Tigers about the Joel Zumaya injury. (Ruptured tendon; it was reattached through surgery, and he missed four months).

Will Carroll is on with us now; very informative...
he said it could be several things, but he'd be "very surprised" if it isn't a ruptured tendon.

Ugh not sounding good.. yeah been waiting and waiting and waiting to hear about Adam..

Cards pitcher put on DL
By Derrick Goold
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
06/09/2008

Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright will be placed on the disabled list Tuesday with a sprained finger, the team announced Monday evening. Wainwright met with team doctors Monday and rest was prescribed for the injury that forced him to leave Saturday's start early. According to a release from the team Wainwright will be re-evaluated later this week to see if rest and ongoing treatment will permit him to begin throwing again.

The team also announced that Todd Wellemeyer (elbow) will return to the team's starting rotation when they return home to face Philadelphia this weekend. Joel Pineiro (groin) will be reactivated from the disabled list sometime this week, according to team officials. And outfielder Rick Ankiel (knee) has been cleared to play Tuesday in Cincinnati.

No surgery for Wainwright
By Joe Strauss
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
06/11/2008

The injury, which forced Wainwright from Saturday night's start against the Houston Astros, is less serious than a tear of the flexor tendon itself and, according to the club, will not require surgery. However, it is not considered minor.

General manager John Mozeliak admitted Tuesday that he expects Wainwright to be sidelined at least three weeks. Mozeliak said the club should have a better idea of the condition's severity after Wainwright rests the digit and is re-examined next week.
