Default Chris Perez gets the call, Izzy to DL

Izzy to visit doctor.

Quote:
1. Put Izzy on the disabled list and shut him down. Take it out of La Russa’s hands. (This is the likely outcome; Isringhausen will visit the doctor on Friday, and I suspect they’ll find something that necessitates a visit to the DL).

2. If Izzy doesn’t go on the DL — which would be followed by a rehab stint in the minors, where he can legitimately attempt to gather himself without pressure — then the alternative is to designate him for minor-league assignment. Which would likely lead to his release after waivers expire.

The Cardinals don’t want to do that. Not yet, anyway.
Also to the Chris Perez stuff tonight about him not appearing in save situation..

Quote:
Hey Bernie, you know anything about Perez not pitching tonight in a save situation for Memphis??

Definitely a conclusion to be drawn there...

This doesn't mean he's up for sure...but that's the way they're leaning, from what I have been led to believe. They certainly want him to be available tommorrow night in STL if they choose him.

If not him, then likely Jimenez.

Movin' On Up: Cards' Perez eyes closer role
Major League debuts from May 16-22
By Lisa Winston / MLB.com

Chris Perez looked the part in Spring Training before notching eight saves in Triple-A. (Danny Wild/MLB.com)

The following players made their first appearance in the Major Leagues between May 16 and May 22:

Chris Perez, RHP, St. Louis Cardinals

What started out, apparently, as the Year of the Struggling Closer could morph into the Year of the Upcoming Closer -- at least in St. Louis. In the span of a week, several veteran big-money and big-name short relievers were relieved of their closer jobs, including Cards right-hander Jason Isringhausen.

Izzy, 35, posted an 8.00 ERA and was replaced in the back end of the bullpen by Ryan Franklin, for the time being anyway. The heir apparent, 22-year-old righty Chris Perez, was summoned from Triple-A Memphis when Isringhausen went on the DL May 16, and made his big-league debut that night.

In that debut, a 3-1 loss to Tampa Bay, Perez was the second of three pitchers used and tossed a perfect inning, striking out one. Two nights later he came on in the ninth and earned the win in a 5-4 victory over the Rays with another scoreless frame. Overall, in three late-inning (though non-closing) outings, he's tossed three shutout innings.

For now, Franklin remains the titular closer. But the 35-year-old right-hander doesn't project in that role for much longer than it will take for the Cards to feel confident in their up-and-comer. Franklin only moved from starting to relief in 2006, and brought just one big-league save into '08. He's notched two -- most recently May 10 -- since moving into the closer's role, after being a standout setup man with a 1.57 ERA.

Perez, meanwhile, definitely profiles for the part. Drafted in the supplemental first round of 2006 out of Miami as compensation for the loss of free-agent starter Matt Morris, he has quite simply mowed down the competition in the two years since then.

With a sinking mid-90s fastball and a devastating slider, he has the prototypical "stuff" for the role and knows how to use it. He combined for 35 saves between Double-A Springfield and (down the stretch) Memphis in his full-season debut in 2007. In two seasons coming into '08, he'd notched 47 saves in 79 games and held hitters to a .155 average. He also pitched for the 2007 Team USA club that won the World Cup in Taiwan last fall.

He had eight saves and a 2.04 ERA when promoted.

He's pitched well so far. 3.2 innings without giving up a run in his career

Izzy ready for rehab outing
By Derrick Goold
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
06/08/2008

HOUSTON — Jason Isringhausen is set to begin his trek back with a minor-league appearance Monday, and while the Cardinals know what awaits their closer, they will let Isringhausen take his time getting there.

"His spot on the club is waiting for him," manager Tony La Russa said Saturday afternoon. "When he's ready, he gets it."

Isringhausen will begin a formal rehab assignment Monday when he starts for the Cardinals' High-A affiliate in Jupiter, Fla. By rule, the righthander has 30 days to complete his rehab assignment, and he could move steadily up the Cardinals' system appearance by appearance. General manager John Mozeliak said there is no scripted schedule in place for Isringhausen.

Isringhausen is ready to return
By Derrick Goold
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
06/12/2008

SPRINGFIELD, MO. — Jason Isringhausen will return to Busch Stadium on Friday for the first time since being so "tired" and "frustrated" and "down," in his words, that he had to get away to get right. He hopes he's coming back to stay.

Isringhausen threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings for the Cardinals' Class AA affiliate Wednesday, and afterward said he's headed to St. Louis to throw Friday for the Cardinals' brass. If that goes well, Isringhausen could be activated from the disabled list as early as this weekend.

He described his mechanics as corrected, his confidence rebooted and himself ready to return to the bullpen, if not immediately as the closer.

"I was tired," said Isringhausen in the Springfield Cardinals' clubhouse shortly after his second rehab appearance. "We don't have any room for error this year. We know that. For me to go out there and do what I was doing wasn't helping the team. So, it was time for me to step aside and figure out what was going on. Went down to Florida, and I think I (did). I feel a lot better now," the righthander concluded. "Mentally, I feel a lot better."
