WHAT TO WATCH: MAY 8

-- Albert Pujols’ streak of consecutive games reaching base hit 35 on Wednesday with his single in the seventh inning. He, however, was a frustrated slugger after the game, having misplayed the popup that would have gotten the Cardinals out of the eighth inning and having gone 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position. Pujols is 0-for-5 in the series with runners in scoring position, and Colorado has had to pitch to him several times because the first two hitters in the Cardinals lineup has been so successful reaching base. (They reached base seven times in 10 plate appearances during Wednesday’s game.)

-- Cesar Izturis ran his hitting streak to eight games with a single in the fourth inning Wednesday. The switch-hitting shortstop has five hits in his past 12 at-bats, and he’s hitting .355 over his previous 10 games. That has raised his average from .186 to .244. He’s scored six runs in than 10-game span and moved into the top five on the team in runs scored. Eleven walks this season has sweetened his on-base percentage to .350, and made the Cardinals double-leadoff lineup more effective.

-- All three of the games so far in this series have been decided by one-run. Eight of the Cardinals past 11 games have been decided by three or fewer runs, and the Cardinals have lost just two of those eight games.

-- With a couple walks and a base hit Wednesday, rookie Brian Barton upped his numbers when it comes to the two L’s of his young career: Leadoff and Lefties. Against lefthanders, the righthander Barton is hitting .321 with a .457 average after going 1-for-1 with a couple walks against Colorado’s Jeff Francis. In the leadoff spot, he’s 6-for-18 (.333) with four walks against six strikeouts.
