Default Mulder Rehab: Shut down with “mild strain”

Cardinals lefthander Mark Mulder is expected to begin a rehab assignment Monday, barring complications during today's outing in extended spring training.

General manager John Mozeliak confirmed the timetable Tuesday afternoon, suggesting that Mulder would begin his assignment at Class A Palm Beach before moving through the system.

"Based on where our minor-league teams are, it makes sense to start him at Palm Beach. I think he's probably like everybody, ready to get out of there," Mozeliak said.

Pitchers may remain on a rehab assignment for up to 30 days, meaning the Cardinals would activate Mulder no later than May 14. However, Mozeliak suggested a quicker process with Mulder, who is returning from surgery last September.

Mulder works 5 good innings
By Chuck King
SPECIAL TO THE POST-DISPATCH
04/16/2008

JUPITER, Fla. — For five innings Mark Mulder looked like the groundball pitcher the Cardinals expected to have the last two seasons.

Making his first rehab start since shoulder surgery ended his 2007 season, Mulder threw 61 pitches in five innings of work for Class A Palm Beach, allowing two runs — one earned — on six hits.

Provided he doesn't experience any setbacks, Mulder expects to make his next start on Sunday for Class AA Springfield. Mulder would not speculate on his return to St. Louis.

Mulder likely Springfield-bound
Kary Booher • April 16, 2008

It appears that St. Louis Cardinals left-hander Mark Mulder is all but a lock to pitch for the Springfield Cardinals on Sunday in a 2:10 p.m. game at Hammons Field.

Springfield general manager Matt Gifford today said he has been inundated with calls about Mulder's possible injury rehab start after the lefty threw five innings Tuesday for High-A Palm Beach, his first start on the comeback trail.

It'll likely be Thursday, however, before Springfield's front office gets the go-ahead to make it official.

Cards now say Mulder's not close
By Joe Strauss
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
04/22/2008

MILWAUKEE -- The Cardinals originally thought lefthanded starter Mark Mulder would return to the active roster after three rehab starts.

That timetable apparently is no longer in force.

General manager John Mozeliak said it is possible Mulder will remain on his current rehab assignment for the maximum 30 days while La Russa suggested he might get "10 starts" before facing major-league bats.

"I don't even put them in the same category. I'm done explaining it," La Russa said when a question compared Pineiro and Mulder. "Mark is going to come up when he's ready to go. He needs to come up not in a process of rehabbing, but ready to pitch like the Mark Mulder of old to the best of his ability. Whatever it takes. There's potentially too much good there."

Mozeliak said: "If you look at it, the best way to approach it is probably to be conservative. I would say it's going in the direction it's supposed to be. He feels good, but he still has room for improvement."

Mulder to pitch Wednesday — for Memphis
Kary Booher • April 29, 2008

So much for hoping St. Louis Cardinals left-hander Mark Mulder would make another start for the Springfield Cardinals.

Mulder is scheduled to make his fourth injury rehab start Wednesday but instead will work at AutoZone Park in Triple-A Memphis in an 11:05 p.m. start against the Salt Lake Bees, an Anaheim Angels affiliate.

Mulder lackluster in Triple-A rehab start
Left-hander insists he's feeling fine, left pitches up in the zone
By Matthew Leach / MLB.com

Left-hander Mark Mulder allowed nine runs, seven earned, over 3 2/3 innings for the Cardinals' Memphis affiliate on Wednesday. (Josh Millstein)

ST. LOUIS -- In Mark Mulder's first Triple-A rehabilitation start, he didn't take a step backward. So that's something. But neither did Mulder take a step forward, and that's a bit concerning.

Mulder, making his fourth Minor League start in his attempt to come back from September shoulder surgery, was roughed up on Wednesday. He permitted nine runs, seven earned, in 3 2/3 innings for the Cardinals' Memphis affiliate. Mulder was reached for three home runs among the nine hits against him; he struck out one and walked one.

After an extremely encouraging start at Double-A Springfield five days earlier, the results were disheartening. But Mulder emphasized that he felt fine, and said that his delivery and release point were as good as in his previous outing.

"I kind of felt like things didn't get worse," Mulder said. "My arm didn't drop. My delivery didn't change. That stayed the same the entire game. I was happy with that.

"It's just that my location was terrible. I can work on location. If I would have gotten out of whack or if I'd gotten messed up during the game, then I would have gotten frustrated with it."

Still, it's no longer a foregone conclusion that Mulder will be added to the Cardinals' Major League starting rotation when his 30-day rehabilitation period ends. He began his rehab on April 15 with a start at Class A Palm Beach. So he can go again on May 5 and May 10, but after that, he can't make any more rehab starts.
