Mulder shut down with “mild strain”
By Derrick Goold

DENVER — After a meeting with the Cardinals team doctor Wednesday morning, lefthanded starter Mark Mulder will be shut down for at least a week to calm what’s being called a “mild rotator cuff strain”, the team announced in a press release this afternoon.

Mulder experienced what was described as “shoulder fatigue” during his start Monday in Memphis. He was scheduled for one start on his rehab assignment, and then the Cardinals were going to have to decide what do with the lefthander when the 30 days of his rehab assignment expired May 14. Wednesday’s diagnosis delays that decision.

“The bottomline is this is not a setback whatsoever,” Mulder’s agent Gregg Clifton said this afternoon. “It’s a hiatus for a week, and then after he’s re-evaluated he’ll be back out there. … Everyone feels a brief rest period will allow him to come back (feeling stronger).”

Before the game, lefthander Mark Mulder, who had been told to rest for a week, worked a bullpen session for pitching coach Dave Duncan who said he had Mulder throw nothing but sinkers for his 40-pitch allotment.

Duncan said Mulder felt fine and would try something similar on Thursday.

"I think we took a step in the right direction," said Duncan. "I don’t think we accomplished everything we need to accomplish."

* Mark Mulder threw a bullpen today -- about 40 pitches, all sinkers.

Mulder shut down 10-14 days
Left-hander has more shoulder irritation during rehab
By Matthew Leach / MLB.com

SAN DIEGO -- Mark Mulder has experienced another setback in his recovery from left shoulder surgery, and he will not make a scheduled rehabilitation start for Triple-A Memphis on Tuesday.

Mulder made five rehab starts in April and May, and for a time it seemed that he was progressing very well. However, his two Triple-A starts went poorly. After the second game at Memphis, Mulder was shut down again with what the club called a mild rotator cuff strain.

According to a release from the team, he is expected to be able to resume his rehab in 10-14 days.
