Ankiel does it all in win
Slugger shines on offense, defense in Cards' first victory
By Matthew Leach / MLB.com

ST. LOUIS -- Rick Ankiel showed off all five of baseball's archetypal tools on Wednesday night. If he masters the "seven skills" -- and after just 267 big league at-bats, he's getting there -- look out.

Save for an error in center field, Ankiel did it all in the Cardinals' 8-3 win over the Rockies. He collected three base hits, hit a home run, made a quality baserunning play and a spectacular catch, and showed off his throwing arm.

That's the five tools -- hitting for average, hitting for power, running, fielding and throwing -- all displayed in the space of three hours. That's a pretty exciting player.

"He's as natural as it gets playing baseball," said starting pitcher Todd Wellemeyer.

Ankiel helps power Cards
By Joe Strauss
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
04/03/2008

April 2, 2008 -- Cardinals center fielder Rick Ankiel dives for a fly ball hit by Colorados Willy Taveras for the first out of the third inning.

Rick Ankiel accomplished something Wednesday night unseen in his three seasons as a major-league starting pitcher. He crafted a complete game.

Ankiel's outing, together with Todd Wellemeyer's five innings, right fielder Ryan Ludwick's three-RBI game and a passable bullpen effort helped hold off the Colorado Rockies 8-3 in front of an announced crowd of 39,915 at wind-chilled Busch Stadium.

Wednesday's crowd represented the first time new Busch has failed to sell out. The game offered a show of versatility by a 28-year-old center fielder appearing in only his 49th major league game as a position player. It also suggested further development within Ankiel's reincarnated career.

"A complete game would be the perfect description," said manager Tony La Russa. "What else would you want to call it?"

Effective but not necessarily efficient on 95 pitches spread over five innings, Wellemeyer held the Rockies to right fielder Brad Hawpe's bases-empty homer. Local sensation Kyle McClellan followed to get five consecutive groundouts before allowing a two-out RBI single in the seventh to make it a 4-2 game.

"He's tough enough," La Russa said about Wellemeyer's 12th major league start. "He's learning all the time. When he pitches we win a lot of the time."

Ludwick tripled to score Schumaker in the fifth inning. Third baseman Troy Glaus delivered his first RBI for the Cardinals on a fly ball to right. Frustrated for much of spring, Ludwick delivered three hits.

"I started feeling better toward the end of spring," said Ludwick, estimating he may have lost "five or six" home runs last month hitting into a pitcher's wind. "My timing started getting better. I started seeing the ball better. I put better swings on the ball."

COLORADO (1-1) at CARDINALS (1-1)
Busch Stadium, 12:10 p.m., FSN Midwest

WHAT TO WATCH--APRIL 3

-- Albert Pujols reached base five times Wednesday night against Colorado, and cleanup hitter Troy Glaus advanced him a base only once – on a fielder’s choice that got an out at the plate. The difference between Glaus’ career numbers hitting No. 4 and when he’s in the No. 5 spot are staggering. It’s an .815 on-base-plus-slugging vs. .862 OPS, a .238 average in 1,435 at-bats as a cleanup hitter vs. a .258 in 1,162 at-bats in the five spot. Glaus shrugs when asked about the difference, and manager Tony La Russa acknowledges that it plays a role in why Glaus will usually bat No. 5 when a righthander is on the mound. Like today.

Getting Glaus into a comfortable role serves two purposes, even early in the season. Pujols is well on his way to that 100-walk season with this lineup; he walked three times Wednesday. First, Pujols needs protection. And, second, Glaus is off to an 0-for-8 start to his Cardinals career.

-- La Russa will have to improvise how he gets a lead to closer Jason Isringhausen this afternoon, if the Cardinals get one. Russ Springer, Ryan Franklin and Kyle McClellan are all unlikely for this afternoon’s game, having each pitched in the first two games of the season. That leaves Ron Villone to throw twice within 20 hours, lefty Randy Flores and Anthony Reyes. La Russa called Reyes his "innings man" for today.
