Bob Knight visits former 'recruit'

Feb. 29, 2008--Chris Duncan (16) is tagged out at home plate by New York Mets catcher Ramon Castro in the first inning.
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — His teammates already knew Chris Duncan was an all-state baseball and football talent at Canyon del Oro High School in Tucson, Ariz. But they were stunned to discover Friday that legendary coach Bob Knight once "recruited" the Cardinals left fielder to play hoops at Indiana University.
Put up to the prank by Chris' father, Cardinals pitching coach Dave Duncan, Knight sent a letter on IU letterhead to Chris' basketball coach informing him that the younger Duncan "was the kind of player we're interested in at Indiana."
One problem: Duncan was a space eater who received little playing time.
"He couldn't shoot worth a damn," Knight, in camp for several days as a guest of manager Tony La Russa, told Duncan's teammates Friday.
