Two more spring debuts in Port St. Lucie
By Derrick Goold
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
02/29/2008

Johan Santana, the biggest offseason acquistion of the New York Mets, will make his spring debut Friday against the Cardinals in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. –
Let the Cirque du Santana begin.

The Cardinals will make a cameo appearance this afternoon as Johan Santana, the Broadway sensation, will make his New York Mets game debut at Tradition Field. The Mets pulled off the biggest trade of the offseason to land the two-time Cy Young Award winner from Minnesota and then negotiated the heaviest contract of the offseason by signing the lefty for seven years, $137.5 million.

"You want to have the opportunity to face a pitcher who has tremendous stuff, even this early," said Cardinals’ third baseman Troy Glaus, who the club acquired, in part, to boost their offense against lefties. "You go up there trying to pick up something, a pattern or maybe a way he uses his pitches, a pattern that he falls into. You can pick up something now that helps you three months down the road."

Glaus knows Santana well. As American Leaguers, the third baseman faced Santana in 21 at-bats. Glaus has a .333 batting average against the lefty, slugging .619 and cracking one home run. It’s Santana’s changeup that gets the most hype, but that’s not the only thing to watch for.

"A mid-90s fastball to go with can’t hurt," Glaus said.

What else to watch for with the Cardinals this afternoon:

-- Adam Wainwright, who has excelled without the daily headlines this spring, makes his spring debut. The Cardinals second-year starter has been sharp in his early batting practice sessions and there has been a buzz about him with his teammates. His spring starts in style: A budding ace opposite a bona fide ace.

-- Josh Phelps and D’Angelo Jimenez are on the trip, likely to sub in for starters after they’ve had three at-bats or so. While both are in the mix to fill the open utility role, a third player could force his way into these auditions. Joe Mather will be on the bench this afternoon, and he could appear at any of the outfield spots or make his return to an infield corner.

-- Prospect pitcher Kyle McClellan is among the young pitchers going north with the team for the game, joining curveball-specialist Mike Parisi, rising prospect Tyler Herron, and superb lefty Jaime Garcia. Cardinals pitching coach Dave Duncan hopes not to use McClellan today or Saturday so that he can see how the Hazelwood West alum fares when given Sunday’s start.
