Coming up: Finally, the Cards start playing games on Wednesday. Mitchell Boggs will start for the Redbirds in an exhibition against St. Louis University. The game is slated to start at 12:05 p.m. CT, and Chris Merrick is the scheduled starter for the Billikens.
The Cardinals open spring play with today’s exhibition against SLU (1-2) at 12:05 St. Louis time in Roger Dean Stadium. The (intriguing) lineup, just posted in the clubhouse:
Colby Rasmus, CF
Brian Barton, DH
Joe Mather, RF
Josh Phelps, 1B
Cody Haerther, LF
David Freese, 3B
Brian Barden, SS
Matt Pagnozzi, C
Jarrett Hoffpauir, 2B
Bench: INF Rico Washington, INF D’Angelo Jimenez, OF Amaury Marti and OF Nick Stavinoha. And a handful of catchers. (That hints that the Cardinals are going to have the above lineup play the game, not sub out early ala most spring games.)
10 a.m.
Lineup update: The Billikens will not throw their three weekend starters - Dave Sever, Scott Turmail and Zach Outman - since they all pitched 6-plus inning last weekend. In addition, the Billikens open a three-game series at Samford on Friday. So, the Billikens will throw a myriad of pitchers this afternoon with each of them seeing an inning or so of work.
10:50 a.m.
The Billikens, who are decked out in their all-gray uniforms, will use aluminum bats against the Cardinals, with the major-leaguers using their normal wooden bats.
