ST. LOUIS -- Reliever Josh Kinney, who sustained a broken bone in his elbow while rehabilitating from Tommy John surgery, has begun a throwing program again. Kinney hopes to be able to pitch in Spring Training games by mid-March, he said on Sunday.
"It's 100 percent healed up," Kinney told reporters at the Cardinals' annual Winter Warm-Up. "It was a broken bone. It feels great. Right now I'm in the middle of a throwing program. I'm long-tossing 150 feet every other day. Next week I'll bump it up to 180 feet. I'm scheduled to get off a mound come February."
Kinney emerged as a vital setup man for the Cardinals late in 2006, but missed the entire '07 season. It's unclear when he might be ready to pitch in Major League regular season games, but if he is available to work Grapefruit League contests, it would be encouraging.
"We'll see how it goes," he said. "I said earlier, I'm not going to push it. My goal is just to be 100 percent healthy. I haven't set a date, whether it's Opening Day or not, that I'm ready. It's important for me, if I'm going to help the club out, I know I need to be 100 percent."
