Just when David Eckstein was ready to have Troy Glaus lean all over him again, the Cardinals and their shedding of stars re-entered the shortstop's life.
Newly signed as Toronto's leadoff hitter, Eckstein said he had prepared himself for Glaus to rest an arm on the top of his head when catching a fly ball, as Glaus had done in Anaheim. Instead, when Eckstein floats back to catch a popup for his new team, he'll hear a familiar voice quietly calling him off.
Scott Rolen is a Blue Jay.
The Cardinals and Toronto finalized an exchange of All-Star third basemen Monday, sending Gold Glove winner Rolen north for the slugger Glaus. The trade leaves Albert Pujols as the only remaining member of the vaunted MV3, and the leader of a whittled core. Jim Edmonds and Rolen have been traded this winter; World Series MVP Eckstein left via
free agency.
"I think it is going to be a good move for both clubs," Eckstein said Monday. "St. Louis was looking for someone to back Albert up, that power bat, and Troy definitely fits that. And this will be a good thing for Scott. We know the situation with Scott, and this is his fresh start."
Shortly before 5 p.m. Monday, the commissioner's office approved the deal, which gained momentum late last week and was agreed to in principle during the weekend.
Rolen will travel to Toronto, where he's to be formally introduced today. The Cardinals confirmed the trade, but officials said they will wait until Wednesday to make any comments out of respect for Marty Hendin, the club's vice president, who died Saturday.
Glaus will return this weekend to St. Louis for his first public appearance as a Cardinal, at the annual Winter Warm-up.
