Default Cards sign Ron Flores, Chris Gibson, Mark Johnson, re-sign Rico and Hugo

The Gateway Grizzlies announced today that the contract of outfielder/designated hitter Chris Gibson has been purchased by the St. Louis Cardinals Organization. Gibson will accept an invitation to attend the organization's Spring Training in Jupiter, Florida in February. Gibson joined the Grizzlies prior to the 2007 season after playing college baseball at Southeast Missouri State University.

The Bellevue, NE native appeared in 61 games for the Grizzlies in 2007. In 181 at-bats Gibson hit .260 with a home run and 15 runs batted in. The 6-2, 210 pound left-handed hitter appeared at five different positions for the Grizzlies last season.

"Chris had attended a workout with the Cardinals prior to the 2004 draft and was a player that we had considered drafting that year, but ultimately felt he was better served by further developing his tools," Cardinals Director of Minor League Operations John Vuch said. "We saw definite improvement from his time spent with the Grizzlies and feel that he is now much more prepared to successfully move into our minor league system."

Gibson is the son of Cardinals Hall of Fame pitcher Bob Gibson.

Cardinals sign Flores' brother, Gibson's son
Posted: December 12, 2007

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- The St. Louis Cardinals signed Hall of Fame pitcher Bob Gibson's son and relief pitcher Randy Flores' younger brother on Wednesday.

The 28-year-old Ron Flores, a left-hander like his brother, was signed to a minor league contract. The Cardinals purchased the contract of Chris Gibson, an outfielder, from the Gateway Grizzlies of the Independent Frontier League.

Ron Flores had a 3.57 ERA in 17 games for the Oakland Athletics last year, striking out 15 in 17 2-3 innings. He spent most of the season at Triple-A Sacramento, going 1-2 with a 2.72 ERA in 40 games.

The Cardinals also signed catcher Mark Johnson and re-signed right-hander Hugo Castellanos and third baseman Rico Washington to minor league deals. All four players will be invited to major league spring training camp.

Yep but I still think the main moves here are bringing back Rico Washington and Hugo.. They had solid seasons last year in a poor farm system lol

Hugo Castellanos appeared in 37 games for Memphis last season and went 3-1 with a 3.49 ERA. He currently is pitching in the Mexican Winter League, where he has posted a 1.17 ERA (23.0 IP / 3 ER) with six saves in 27 outings out of the bullpen.

Rico Washington is currently batting .311 with seven home runs and 32 RBI in the Venezuelan Winter League. His 2007 season was shortened by a left knee strain, as he began the year with Double-A Springfield and then hit .315 after a promotion to Memphis in mid April.
