Default Antonetti Rejects Cardinals; Mozeliak Named GM

Just an FYI...

It's official.

3 pm newser at Busch

Mozeliak is hired ...

3-year contract...

Antonetti apparently backed out; concerns over autonomy (in other words: the Luhnow factor). That according to associates....

Cards say Antonetti wasn't offered GM job.

Much more later.

Also: the San Diego Union Tribune reports today that the Cardinals have hired Jaron Madison, the Padres' assistant director of scouting.

Madison, 32, will assist Jeff Luhnow.... Cardinals have made changes in their scouting department and Madison figures to have a prominent role in the player-development operation.

New Cardinals general manager enjoying the job
By R.B. FALLSTROM

JUPITER, Fla. -- New St. Louis Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak is a lot more media friendly than his predecessor, Walt Jocketty.

Mozeliak, 36, took over this offseason after Jocketty's removal. Already, he has presided over significant changes as the Cardinals begin the rebuilding process.

Quote:
AP: How much more time is required of you?

Mozeliak: The time commitment has gone up but I've got a really good staff in place and as that starts to evolve at some point it'll probably ratchet back down. This offseason was very long and obviously making the moves we made did create a lot of office time. Now there's some normalcy. It's more like a 12-hour day or maybe 14 hours, depending on what's going on. Obviously in spring training there's a little bit of a laid-back atmosphere.

Let the Mozeliak era begin
By Joe Strauss
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
03/30/2008

John Mozeliak is the 11th general manager in the Cardinals' storied history.
(Chris Lee/P-D)

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — John Mozeliak understands media. He listens to talk radio in all its informative, entertaining and puerile forms. He reads punctuation. He realizes the court of public opinion's sway.

And then the 11th man to sit in the Cardinals general manager's chair insists the court's verdict is premature.

"We still want to put out a team that can compete within the division," he says. "And if things go well with some of our injured pitchers, we'll be better than people expect us to be. We don't look at this year as a timeout, dump salary, unload talent just to wait for '09 or '10. I think a lot of people perceived us thinking about it. I strongly reject that. ... Frankly, if we are healthy, we have a chance."

Camp ended with Mozeliak asserting himself in formation of the opening-day roster. He insisted Anthony Reyes be part of the bullpen after pitching coach Dave Duncan publicly dismissed the idea. Such public tiffs with Jocketty were non-existent.

"Overall, I thought it was a lot of what I expected," Mozeliak says. "There have been challenges. But when you start looking ahead at games that count, that's what it's all about."
