(KSDK) - The stories surrounding David Eckstein's contract negotiations with the cardinals are different... On Saturday John Mozeliak had this to say.

"There was a deal offered and he was given multiple times to tell me what he felt he should get and what he's worth and he never came back," said Mozeliak.

But Eckstein says the cardinals never made him an official offer.

"My agent and I had discussions with the cardinals leading up to the season. Once the season was about to start there were some type of discussions you can call it an offer you can call it whatever. But it was one of those things that we both decided to end the discussions and pick them back up once the season ended," said Eckstein.

Since the end of the season. there have been reports that Eckstein's agent asked for to much money... But Eckstein says the only thing he and his agent asked for was for Eckstein to remain a cardinal.

"That's the one thing I want to clarify especially to the St. Louis fans. First off my agent and I never set any demands or any parameters to the St. Louis Cardinals. We were willing to listen to any offer they had we repeatedly told them my desires to stay a St. Louis Cardinal and the one thing that I promise you the Cardinals never once gave me or my agent the opportunity to accept or reject an offer to remain a St. Louis Cardinal, said Eckstein".

The butler did it, with a revolver.

James Earl Ray wasn't that good of a shot -- conspiracy.

Phillies sign outfielder Taguchi
By Todd Zolecki
INQUIRER STAFF WRITER

The Phillies found more depth and versatility for their outfield today.

They signed outfielder So Taguchi to a one-year contract worth a guaranteed $1.05 million, which includes a club option for 2009 and performance bonuses.

Taguchi hit .290 with three home runs and 30 RBIs last season for the St. Louis Cardinals. He also hit .406 as a pinch-hitter. In his six-year career with the Cardinals, he hit .283 overall and .337 with runners in scoring position.

Taguchi has played all three outfield positions and presumably would be Shane Victorino's replacement in center field should Victorino miss any significant period of time. Before Taguchi came aboard, it had been assumed Jayson Werth would play in center should Victorino need a rest.

Taguchi's arrival means the Phillies' outfield is set for opening day, assuming everybody stays healthy: Pat Burrell, Geoff Jenkins, Victorino, Werth and Taguchi. It also completes a five-man bench, should the Phillies open the season with 12 pitchers: Werth, Taguchi, Chris Coste, Eric Bruntlett and Greg Dobbs or Wes Helms, depending on who is playing third base.

Kip to the pen.. we've heard that before.. he was good as a reliever for us IMO..

Wells tries to make sense of relief role

TUCSON - Kip Wells arrived at the Hi Corbett Field clubhouse today, still stung over his demotion to the bullpen.

Wells signed a $3.1 million contract with the Rockies to compete for a spot in the rotation. He knew a relief role was a possibility, but didn't expect the decision to come this soon.

"I'll just do what they ask me to do. My goal was to start," said Wells, who went 7-17 with the St. Louis Cardinals last season. "I am trying to understand this from their side. I don't know really what to say."
