By Bart Pohlman / Memphis Redbirds

[Boxscore]

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Round Rock used a seven-run second inning to help cruise past Memphis 10-6 Friday night at AutoZone Park. An announced crowd of 8,127 saw the Express power its way to an early 9-0 lead and not look back.

"We tried to battle and come back there in the middle of the game, but they were just hitting the ball too well tonight," Redbirds outfielder Nick Stavinoha said.

Memphis starter P.J. Walters was charged with most of the damage, pitching only 1.2 innings while giving up nine hits and nine earned runs. The loss is his first of the season, dropping him to 4-1.

The Redbirds and Express continue a four-game series Saturday night at 6:05 p.m. at AutoZone Park. Clayton Mortensen, who was called up from Springfield Friday, will start for Memphis.

First-half title is in the Cards
Palm Beach clinches FSL East following Manatees' loss
By Alan Friedman / Special to MLB.com

Daryl Jones is among the FSL leaders in hitting and slugging percentage. (Jerry Hale/MLB.com)

The Palm Beach Cardinals secured the Florida State League East Division first-half title Saturday, despite dropping a 7-5 decision to the Tampa Yankees at Steinbrenner Field.

Palm Beach wrapped up a third division championship in four years when the second-place Brevard County Manatees were blanked by the Fort Myers Miracle, 2-0. The Cardinals (39-23) have an eight-game lead over the Manatees with eight games to play.

Despite clinching on the night of a loss, Cardinals manager Gaylen Pitts praised his team's ability to win close games.

"We probably lead the league in one-run games and we've been able to win most of them," said Pitts, who is in his second season with Palm Beach. "When you do that, you're pitching well starting out and on the back end. Plus, our defense has been pretty decent."

Sharpshooter Todd gunning for promotion
By Derrick Goold

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Called into to finish off what closer Jason Isringhausen started, it took Jess Todd only three pitches to assert his ownership of the game.

Isringhausen threw his 22nd pitch to get his fifth out of his rehab start and then turned the game over to the Todd, the scheduled starter for Wednesday’s Class AA game at Hammons Field. Todd, the Springfield Cardinals’ supernova prospect, threw three consecutive cut fastballs to Arkansas’ Corey Smith. Smith didn’t have a chance.

Todd finished the game, a 6-1 victory, throwing the final 7 1/3 innings and allowing one run (it was unearned). The righthander, taken in the second round of last summer’s draft, struck out six and walked two. He allowed five hits. To drop his Texas League ERA to 0.83 in seven starts at the level, Todd threw just 83 pitches and 17 of the 20 balls put in play were … yes, on the ground. Of the 63 fastballs he threw, 44 were strikes. Of the 18 sliders he threw, 15 were strikes. He said he only threw five sinkers in the game because it was flat.
