The Cardinals added four players to their 40-man roster on Monday, while requesting release waivers on two others.
Larry Bigbie and Carmen Cali have likely seen the end of their respective tenures with the Redbirds, as both were removed from the roster. Bigbie endured a frustrating and injury-marred season after he was acquired in a trade from the Rockies. Cali, who possesses an exciting arm, never harnessed his control and was demoted to Double-A Springfield after spending time in the Majors in 2004 and 2005.
Bigbie, 29, appeared in 17 games for the Cardinals, going 6-for-25 (.240) with a double and an RBI. He was acquired in the deal that also brought Aaron Miles to St. Louis and sent lefty reliever Ray King to Colorado. Cali, 28, has made a total of 16 Major League appearances, all with St. Louis, posting a 9.45 ERA with no decisions.
Meanwhile, St. Louis added four players to the roster in advance of the deadline for December's Rule 5 Draft. Pitchers Blake Hawksworth, Dennis Dove and Troy Cate and outfielder Cody Haerther were all placed on the 40-man roster.
Hawksworth, who will turn 24 next spring, was rated as the Cardinals' best prospect before losing most of the 2004 and 2005 seasons due to injuries. He made a strong comeback in 2006, going 11-4 with a 2.92 ERA in 27 starts split between Class A Palm Beach and Double-A Springfield.
