After playing deep into October, the Cardinals will follow it up by starting next season early. The defending World Series champions will kick off the 2007 season on Sunday night, April 1, at home against the Mets in a rematch of the National League Championship Series.
That's just one of the highlights of the 2007 Cardinals schedule, released by the team on Monday. The Sunday night game, set for 7:05 p.m. CT and to be carried on ESPN2, will be the first Major League Baseball regular-season game of '07.
Following an off-day on Monday, April 2, the Cards will play the Mets on April 3 and 4 before taking off on their first road trip. St. Louis plays 20 of its first 34 games at home, as well as 22 of the final 37 games of the season.
The first matchup with the rival Cubs comes April 20-22 at Wrigley Field, with a return trip to Chicago for four games Aug. 17-20. Chicago visits new Busch Stadium three times: April 27-29, July 24-26 and Sept. 14-16. The Astros visit for two series, May 4-6 and Sept. 20-23.
All three of the Cards' postseason opponents receive rematches against the World Series champs. The Padres visit Busch Stadium on Aug. 6-9, while St. Louis plays at Detroit in Interleague action May 18-20. Also on the Interleague slate are the Angels (home, June 8-10), the franchise's first visit to Oakland to play the A's (June 15-17) and two series against the Royals (at Kansas City, June 12-14, at home June 18-20).
In addition to 16 games against the Cubs, divisional matchups include 15 games against the Reds and Brewers, 18 against the Pirates and 16 against Houston. The Cardinals will close out the season on the road for the first time since 2003, with three games at Milwaukee and three at Pittsburgh Sept. 24-30.
