Chris Carpenter accomplished something Tuesday night at Turner Field that took him longer than winning a Cy Young Award. He beat the Atlanta Braves.
Carpenter had helped the Cardinals to a 5-2 lead when rain interrupted the visitors' sixth-inning at-bat for nearly three hours. Play resumed without Carpenter, but the Cardinals went on to win 6-3, allowing the 2005 National League Cy Young Award winner to defeat the bothersome Braves for the first time in four career starts. Carpenter had made 228 appearances and 211 major-league starts before controlling a team that had previously done nothing except frustrate him.
