I've always liked Stottlemyre and his aggressive strategy of pitching inside. I think the Mariner's have staged a real coup de' grace by getting him.

SEATTLE -- Any opposing batter that crowds home plate must back off, and any Mariners starting pitcher that thinks five innings is a full day's work, has another thing coming.
Those are among the messages new Mariners pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre plans to deliver.
"I am a big, big believer in pitching inside and I will tell you this, the Seattle Mariners will pitch inside next year," Stottlemyre said from his Sammamish, Wash., home. "I am not afraid of going on record with that, because pitching inside is an absolute must. I think you have to pitch inside to be successful outside."
The experienced pitching guru also is a firm believer in his starting pitchers going at least seven innings most of the time -- something the Mariners' rotation didn't do often enough this season. Seattle finished 10th among American League teams in innings pitched with 928 2/3.
