SEATTLE -- Manager John McLaren will have the opportunity to assemble his own coaching staff for the 2008 season, as the club told five coaches on Friday that they will not return next year.
Pitching coach Rafael Chaves, third-base Carlos Garcia, bench coach Mike Goff and bullpen coach Jim Slaton have been relieved of their duties. First-base coach Gary Thurman, who was a midseason addition to the staff, has been asked to return in a yet-to-be-determined coaching capacity in the Minor Leagues.
Hitting instructor Jeff Pentland is the only coach asked to return. The Mariners finished second in the league in hitting, with a .287 average.
