Ibanez rips 2 hrs...Mariners stay in Wild Card Race
Quote:
BALTIMORE -- Jeff Weaver had finally got some support, and he finally put it to good use.
The Mariners put together three-run rallies in both the seventh and eighth innings, sending eight batters to the plate in each frame, and stormed to a 10-3 victory over the Orioles at Camden Yards to give Weaver his first win since June 25 and end a personal four-game losing streak.
The Mariners were averaging 3.21 runs per game when Weaver was on the mound, the lowest run support average for any starter in the American League with at least 15 starts. But after putting up two runs on the board in Weaver's last three outings combined, Seattle's bats finally awoke from their slumber for the right-hander.
"That's the type of team we've got going this year," Weaver said. "As a starting pitcher, you keep it close and get your innings in and you've got a pretty good chance for things like that to happen."
Things finally did happen for Seattle in the late stages of the game, when Raul Ibanez hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning outburst to finish 3-for-6 with two home runs, a double and four RBIs. The game marked his seventh career multi-home run game to give him a team-leading 66 RBIs this season. He hadn't homered in any of his previous 31 games.
