SAN DIEGO -- Raul Ibanez made sure the Mariners' first venture into extra innings this season had a happy ending.
His leadoff home run in the 11th inning Friday night gave the Mariners a 6-5 Interleague victory over the Padres in front of 44,325 at PETCO Park, San Diego's largest crowd of the season.
Ibanez, who hit 33 home runs last season, had gone 159 at-bats since hitting his first -- and only -- home run this season. This one came off Cla Meredith, the sixth San Diego pitcher used in the series opener, and gave Seattle (31-26) a huge win in a game the Mariners led by four runs in the fifth inning and lost all of it in the seventh inning.

Shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt, who extended his career-best hitting streak to 19 games, committed his 14th error of the season that contributed mightily to the no-decision Batista had to settle for instead of notching his seventh win in 11 decisions.
Batista was masterful for six frames, holding the Padres to four hits and one run.
But three walks -- two of them with two outs -- and an infield single that Betancourt threw away at first base, allowing a second run to score, contributed to a game-tying, four-run Padres uprising.
"Miguel was absolutely outstanding, and all of a sudden in the seventh inning he started flying open and lost his release point," Hargrove said. "He got it back and threw the ball well again, but the three walks in that inning killed him. We thought he had Cruz struck out on a 3-and-2 pitch."
SAN DIEGO -- Jeff Weaver needed all the help he could get in his return to the Mariners rotation.
Most of the help came after his medically dictated departure, but soon enough to prevent him from absorbing another loss in a winless season, as the Mariners awakened from several sleep-walking episodes to overcome the Padres, 6-5, in front of 37,178 at PETCO Park on Saturday.
Second baseman Jose Lopez delivered a go-ahead single to center field with one out in the ninth inning, giving Seattle its second lead of the Interleague game, which ended with closer J.J. Putz striking out Jose Cruz Jr. to earn his 17th consecutive save this season.
seattle is one of the surprise teams of the year, they are playing good baseball right now.

SAN DIEGO -- The Mariners have been saying all along that there's something about this team that makes it capable of being a playoff contender.
Well, their three-day visit to PETCO Park provided the best evidence yet that they could have a shot at their dream.
On a sunny Sunday afternoon, they hung in against a starting pitcher that has the lowest home ERA in the Major Leagues, overcame a two-run deficit with another productive seventh inning, used Friday night's starting pitcher as a reliever in the eighth inning of a tie game, stole the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth against history's only 500-save closer and handed the ball to their own dependable game-ender to put a bow on the Interleague series.
Add it all up, and what the Mariners received was a 4-3 victory over the Padres in front of 35,950 and the first three-game sweep by an opposing team all season and the first-ever for the Mariners in San Diego.

Yes one of the surprise teams of the season so far I would say. People in the NW are starting to get excited about them. I was just up in Seattle and their was quite a buzz up there for the Mariners.
i think the seattle will not hang around long but they will make it tough for the american league teams who are trying to make a post season run.
