Default World Series Hero Agrees to 1 Year Deal

No official announcment was made Friday by the team.

It is thought that Weaver's deal will be completed once he passes a physical. His could earn an additional $1 million in incentives if he reaches either 32 starts or 200 innings pitched.

Weaver -- who is represented by agent Scott Boras -- helped the St. Louis Cardinals to the World Series title by going 3-2 with a 2.43 ERA in five postseason starts.

Weaver started the season with the Angels but was just 3-10 with a 6.29 ERA in 16 starts. He was designated for assignment by the Angels in July and later traded to the Cardinals for Minor Leaguer Terry Evans and cash considerations.

Weaver, who made $8.325 million last season, is a fly-ball pitcher who could fare well at spacious Safeco Field. However, he's had a problem keeping the ball in the park. Last season, he allowed 18 home runs while with the Angels and 16 with the Cardinals. In 2005, he allowed 35 long balls.

Weaver has a career record of 86-101 with a 4.58 ERA in 257 games (240 starts).

Other than the Mariners, the Pirates have showed significant interest in Weaver, who played for Pittsburgh manager Jim Tracy while he was with the Dodgers.

The Mariners have retooled their starting rotation this winter, adding Horacio Ramirez and Miguel Batista. The fifth spot in the rotation was thought to be battle that would be settled in Spring Training between Woods and Baek.
Mariners seem to be making an attempt to strengthen their lineup. With the pick ups of Ramirez, Batista, and now Weaver to go up behind Felix Hernandez, Mariners pitching staff looks to be shaping up.

They have also added RP - Chris Reitsma (Braves), OF - Jose Guillen (Nationals), and Jose Vidro (Nationals) who is expected to be the teams DH.

Look for Seattle to be in the running for the AL West Division Title, this season.

That depends on how much they keep an eye on Felix, if they let him go with out many restrictions he can be an ace this year. Weaver is up in the air, he is in a pitchers park so that will help.

Sounds like the Mariners have the same needs as the Rangers. We have Jamey Wright in the #5 slot and two youngsters - McCarthy and Tejeda - who also needs to step up. Fortunately, we have a real go-getter as a GM and Daniels will build a playoff-caliber pitching staff in time. Visit The Talkin Texan Rangers Blog
