When Lou Piniella was named manager of the Cubs on Monday, one of the first calls he made was to John McLaren, his longtime bench coach with the Mariners and Devil Rays.
Piniella wanted McLaren to be his right-hand man in Chicago, too. It just happened there was one city that could drive a wedge between them.
That city is Seattle, and on Thursday the Mariners hired McLaren to be manager Mike Hargrove's bench coach for the 2007 season.
"It came out of the blue, to be honest with you," McLaren, 55, said of his return to Seattle in a conference call. "The hardest thing I ever had to do was to call Lou Piniella.
