SAN FRANCISCO -- Insuring that he will remain the "Voice of the Giants," the San Francisco Giants have signed broadcaster Jon Miller to a six-year extension through the 2012 season to work on KNBR radio and selected television broadcasting, club Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Larry Baer announced today.

"Jon is perhaps the leading baseball broadcaster in the country. We are extremely fortunate to have him calling Giants games for the forseeable future," said Baer. "His knowledge of baseball and the game's history are unsurpassed, and his rich descriptions of Giants games paint a vivid picture for our fans. Jon combines a tremendous wit with a flair for the dramatic, which makes listening to his radio and television accounts such a joy for baseball fans."

The Bay Area native enters his 11th season with the Giants, coming to San Francisco in 1997 after spending the previous 14 years with the Baltimore Orioles By the end of his new contract in 2012, Miller will become one of five Giants broadcasters to have covered the team for at least 15 seasons. He will complete his 16th season in 2012 and will join Lon Simmons (24 years), Duane Kuiper (will have 20 seasons in 2010 at the end of his contract) and Mike Krukow (20 seasons in 2010 at the end of his contract) and Hank Greenwald (15 years).

An award-winning broadcast veteran of more than 20 years, Miller is also the play-by-play voice on ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball telecasts. After a four-year stint at NBC-TV from 1986-89, where he announced an occasional Game of the Week with either Tony Kubek or Joe Garagiola, he matriculated to ESPN. During his 17-year tenure at ESPN, Miller has been nominated six times for an "ACE" award, emblematic of cable television excellence, and won the award in 1991 and 1996 for his play-by-play work. Nominated twice for a national Emmy Award in 1995 and 1996, he has broadcast the World Series on ESPN Radio the past eight years.

Along with the Giants and Orioles, Miller has also broadcast for the Oakland Athletics (1974), Texas Rangers (1978-79) and Boston Red Sox (1980-82). He has also broadcast hockey, basketball and soccer in his distinguished career.

With today's announcement, the Giants have insured that the game's best broadcasting crew will be in San Francisco for years to come. Miller joins Kuiper, Krukow and Dave Flemming as the most accomplished announcing crew in baseball.

I loved Jon as the O's announcer for many years. I came on after Chuck Thompson had basically retired, so Miller was really the only voice I knew.
