Age: 45
Current position: Giants bench coach.
Background: Former shortstop played briefly for Pirates in 1983-84 before shoulder injury derailed his career. Managed six playoff teams in seven years in Giants minor league system. His clubs twice posted best record in all of minor league baseball. Has spent nine seasons on Giants staff, including past eight as bench coach.
Advantages: Unmatched knowledge of the Giants system. Smart, prepared and focused. Interviewed well in Los Angeles (2005) and Pittsburgh (2000). Viewed as classy and extremely competitive despite his understated style. Admired by owner Peter Magowan.
Disadvantages: Lacks star power. No extensive major league playing background. Not comfortable as a self-promoter. Organization might want fresher face after two losing seasons.
