Peter Magowan's declaration of independence from the Giants' cherished Barry-centric philosophy was directed at the wrong person. The team's unnamed new manager needs to hear the message, and believe it. But Magowan's intended receiver was Jeff Borris, the agent for Barry Bonds, who is more accustomed to having the owner's wallet profligately thrown his way.
When Magowan says Bonds won't be the centerpiece of the team, he means that he doesn't want Bonds to eat up 21 percent of the team payroll again. Magowan doesn't care how much scenery the left fielder chews. In fact, the more spectacle, the better.
