It is more than a spirit of competition that drives Giants shortstop Omar Vizquel.
Oh sure, he is a jumping jack on the field, a 10-time Gold Glover adored in his native Venezuela, one of baseball's all-time greats who may someday enter the Hall of Fame without buying a ticket, is hitting over .300 for the Giants this season and is a 39-year-old man with the heart of a kid.
It's also a giving heart.
Vizquel is San Francisco's nominee for the coveted Roberto Clemente Award, recognizing the player who best exemplifies the game of baseball, sportsmanship, community involvement and the individual's contribution to his team.
It is named in honor of the former Pirates outfielder whose spirit and goodwill will always be remembered. Clemente died in a plane crash while attempting to transport relief supplies to earthquake-stricken Nicaragua on Dec. 31, 1972.
