CINCINNATI -- It isn't the role Giants pitcher Jamey Wright envisioned for himself in September.
He's toyed with bullpen jobs before and has had success, but his mind-set and pitching style is suited for the long haul of starting. As San Francisco's fifth man this season, he had 21 starting assignments, then was yanked out of the rotation when his earlier 5-3 record and 3.84 ERA tumbled to 6-10 and 5.22 by early August.
Long relief is a no-man's land, the loneliest occupation in baseball, and Wright's career was suddenly heading downhill.
Yet the demotion became a blessing, as the 31-year-old right-hander has excelled, logging a 1.23 ERA by limiting opponents to one run over 7 1/3 innings and showing a nasty sinker on the current road trip.
