Jason Schmidt has expressed interest in returning to the Giants next season, but Roy Oswalt's contract extension, which he received Tuesday, might have upped the ante for teams willing to bid for Schmidt, a free agent-to-be.
Oswalt's five-year, $73 million contract with the Astros takes effect next season. He could have been a free agent entering 2008 but chose to stay in Houston, where his average annual salary will be $14.6 million.
"It doesn't really matter to me," Schmidt said. "Everything will take care of itself. I'm not worried about it."
