Soon after Mike Matheny agreed to sit out the rest of the season because of ongoing post-concussion symptoms, he sat down with Giants general manager Brian Sabean and apologized.
Yes, he apologized.
"I told Brian I realize I've put him and this
organization in a tough spot," the forthright Gold Glove catcher said. "I understand the business side. He'll have to do what he sees as right in this organization."
As much as everyone wants to see Matheny back on opening day next year, the reality is that the Giants likely will have to cover themselves by acquiring another front-line catcher.
Matheny hasn't played since May 31, when he took a foul tip off the mask. It was a knockout blow after several other hard hits over the preceding days, and countless shots over his career.
